Irma Pannes was born the 19th of February 1902 in Krefeld Germany a city of the lower Rhein region near Holland.

Luigi Caglio wrote:"Irma Bernasconi Pannes who originated from a well to do family in Germany, deserves to be remembered for the dedication and support in favoring the career of her husband Mario Bernasconi . She made it her mission almost a cult, to keep alive his memory and his works from the year of his passing away to her death in 1971."

Irma married Mario in 1927 and together they left for Germany with a long stay in Berlin. Mario was able to extend his horizons and create. Irma was a great help to him. Between one exhibit and another friendships were formed with famous personalities of the arts, science, and literature as with the writers Carl Zuckmayer and Eric Maria Remarque. From Berlin they traveled on to cities such as Frankfurt, Munich and Paris.

In 1929 they returned to the Ticino and lived in the beautiful Capriasca region. It was in Cureglia in 1927 that Irma began to create; mostly small sculptures representing women, such as "La Ticinese", "La Contadina", "Madre e bambino", "La Lavandaia" and others.
With the sculpture of the "Lettrice sognante" in 1939 Irma , as the only woman, received the prize of the Zurich exhibit (Landi) Switzerland.
In 1940 Irma decided to dedicate herself completely to painting. In the Ticino her art bloomed fully. She created landscapes that could often be seen at the exhibits of the Società di belle Arti, those of the painters, sculptors and architects of Switzerland and in the Society of the Swiss Women at the Lyceum Club and in personal exhibits where she always received the best reviews from critics.
